George Wayne Volberding, 78, of Ogallala, died July 12, 2010, at Indian Hills Manor.

He was born Dec. 3, 1931, in Akron, Colo., the son of George and Alice (Sherman) Volberding. The family moved to a farm southeast of Ogallala. He attended rural schools and then graduated from Ogallala High School in 1949.

The family moved to a farm southwest of Brule and he was engaged in farming with his father.

In 1954 he married Gladys Kraft in Phoenix, Ariz. The couple made their home on the family farm. In 2001 he retired and moved into Ogallala.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, watching baseball, and horseback riding. He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and a member of the National Rifleman’s Association.

Survivors include his son, Rod (Ginny) Volberding of Ogallala; daughter, Shandra (Jim) Bescheinen of Lincoln; mother-in-law, Lucille Kraft of North Platte; three sisters, Betty Ebke of Julesburg, Colo., Sherri Gosnell of Brule, and Bernice (George) Mercer of Ogallala; six grandchildren, Deidre and Shane Volberding, Julie, Joshua, Lucas, and Hannah Bescheinen and numerous nieces and nephews.
