Viola Mae “Sissy” Hicks, 82, of Mullen, died Aug. 9, 2011, at her home.

She was born Feb. 6, 1929, in Cherry County, to Art and Edna (LeLaCheur) Gorsuch. She attended school at Reigle School in Cherry County. As a child growing up she helped her father on the ranches where he worked.

She married Billy C. Hicks on June 28, 1949, in Alliance. To this union three children were born – Bill, John, and Dorothy.



While her children were in school they lived west of town. She was a waitress at the Jewel Diner and the Mullen Cafe. Later she worked at Schmokers garage pumping gas. She was also a cook at many of the ranches in the Hyannis, Gordon, Maxwell and Mullen area.

She was always there to take care of those who needed extra help.



Survivors include her children, Bill (Artis) of Mullen, John (Jean) of Dunn Center, N.D., and Dorothy (Marshall) of Mills, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four step great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Wayne (Janet) Gorsuch, Lloyd (Nancy) Gorsuch, and Paul (Mary Ellen) Gorsuch; sister. Dorothy Boyer; brothers-in-law, Gary Hubert, and Bill Burt; and sister-in-law, Wanda Gorsuch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Lois Hampton, Francis Burt, and Opal Hubert; brother, Raymond Gorsuch; and an infant brother.
