The weekend dawned sunny and unseasonably warm for the 2009 Ice Fishing Derby at Saratoga Lake, making pleasant weather conditions for the 515 registered adults and 57 small fry. Even the fish seemed livelier. The first two hours on Saturday morning saw so many “big ones” come in to be measured that more than a page was filled each hour in the record book as length, girth, and weight was tallied.

Jason Deberard of Laramie, took first place, with a 3.24 pound trout, which netted him $2,000. Curt James, Saratoga, finished second with a 2.72 pound trout, and took home $1,000. Jerry Hamel, Laramie, took third place for $500. Marcus Bryson, Cheyenne, won the Small Fry contest, which included a $200 Savings Bond, small cooler, and a bag of miscellaneous toys and snacks.

Several Bounty Fish were also caught winning $500 for the first tagged fish caught. Bob Buderus of Fort Collins brought in the first one; Ron Grogan, Laramie, came in with the second one; and Erick Jamieson of Casper had the third tagged Bounty fish.

The largest fish each hour was worth a prize, amounting to $100 for adults, and $20 for Small Fry. Several fishermen won the hourly award for largest fish more than one time. In addition, door prizes were drawn each hour for merchandise provided by area merchants.

The large number of cash prizes awarded amounted to over $6,000 and made for many happy fishermen. However, many other participants caught fish for their dinner, or simply enjoyed the lovely weather and camaraderie of the weekend.
