Resource corner practice sign-up ends Sept. 30

LINCOLN, Neb. – Landowners interested in enrolling pivot corners and small fields in CRP under the Central Basins Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program must enroll at their local Farm Service Agency office by the Sept. 30 deadline.

Pivot corners and small fields (resource corners) may be enrolled in 10-year Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) contracts. For these enrolled lands, landowners may receive 120 percent of the annual CRP rental rate and cost-share from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for establishing cover. They also may receive a cost-share of $100 per pivot corner or small field and $100 for enrolling all four corners on a pivot from state funds provided by the Pheasants Forever, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

“The deadline is a result of new national rules regarding the enrollment of noncontinuous practices in CREP,” said Tim McCoy, ag program manager for Game and Parks and the Central Basins CREP coordinator. “If landowners have an interest in enrolling pivot corners or small fields in the Central Basins CREP, we want them to get into the FSA office and get enrolled because we don’t know how soon, or if, they will have this opportunity again.”

An estimated 14,000 acres are available for enrollment in the resource corner practices.

The Central Basins CREP includes the entire Upper Big Blue, Lower Big Blue, Little Blue, and Lower Platte North Natural Resources Districts, most of the Lower Platte South NRD, and portions of Lower Elkhorn, Papio-Missouri, Central Platte, and Tri-Basin NRDs.

After Oct. 1, only landowners in Thayer, Butler, Gage, Jefferson, Lancaster, Saline, Saunders, and Seward counties will be able to enroll in the resource corner practices.

“We aren’t sure how long that will be available either, as we’d really like all of the CREP practices to be available to anyone in the CREP area,” McCoy said.
