Colorado State University’s Equine Sciences Program has received $1.5 million from Art and Catherine Nicholas, the owners of a premier Western ranch in Wyoming. The money will be invested and earnings from the investment will provide operating funds for the Equine Sciences Program. The donation established the Wagonhound Land and Livestock Chair in Equine Sciences. Jerry Black is in this position now. He gets to choose how to use the annual proceeds from the invested money to fulfill needs to support the program. The estimated earnings from the investment is around $70,000 per year.
The Haxtun and Yuma County Conservation Districts and NRCS will be sponsoring a No-Till and Cover Crop Workshop Part II at the Fairgrounds in Holyoke, Colo., on February 16, 2012. The workshop is free and runs from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. There is no fee, but registration is needed to reserve your lunch.

On Thursday, February 23, 2012, the annual Governor’s Forum on Colorado Agriculture will take place at the Renaissance Denver Hotel in Denver, Colo. The theme of the forum is “Exploring Ag Security and Food Safety.” Topics will include global agricultural security and Colorado food safety, as well as many different breakout sessions. A pre-forum will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the Governor’s Residence at Boettcher Mansion in Denver, Colo. Early registration deadline is January 23, 2012 and prices are $100 or $45 for students. After January 23, 2012, prices are $120 or $50 for students.

On Tuesday, January 17, one of the four World’s Livestock Auctioneer Championship quaterfinals will take place in Greeley, Colo., at Producers Livestock Marketing Association sale barn. 23 auctioneers, from 12 states with one from Canada, will compete on Tuesday. Two of the competitors come directly from Colorado – Brian Weitzel of Brush, Colo., and Shawn Silverberg of Walden, Colo. Three competitors from the Greeley competition will move on to compete at the 2012 Livestock Marketing Industry Convention and 49th World Livestock Auctioneer Championship in Turlock, Calif., in June.
