Colorado has quickly earned notoriety worldwide for the legalization of recreational marijuana. Marijuana’s non-intoxicating and often overlooked cousin, hemp, has also piqued interest for its potential to be refined into products such as fuel, rope, paper, food, clothing and more.
The cannabis variety, now the focus of entrepreneurs and lawmakers alike, will take center stage at the second annual Hemp Expo, held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the Ranch Events Complex, 5260 Arena Circle in Loveland.
“We have people flying in from all over the world,” said Morris Beegle, the Hemp Expo coordinator. “There will be more experts under this roof than at any other time in the history of the planet. It will be 4 to 5 times bigger than last year. There will be about 1,000, 1,500 or more. Last year we had about 300.”
Over 70 companies and organizations will attend, as well as over 50 speakers. There will be hemp movie documentaries, live artists painting and sketching and musicians, including Daniel “Bambaata” Marley. There also will be activities for kids.
The expo will focus on industrial and medicinal hemp, not marijuana. Hemp contains less than 0.3 percent of THC. Plants surpassing that cannot be used commercially. Over 1 percent of THC is considered potentially intoxicating.
