Shutdown poses Outlook Forum, Census of Ag challenges
The government shutdown that ended Friday and the possibility of another shutdown in three weeks pose challenges for the Agriculture Department’s annual Agricultural Outlook Forum, which is scheduled Feb. 21 to 22, and for the release of the five-year Census of Agriculture, which is scheduled for Feb. 21.
The USDA Office of Communications told The Hagstrom Report in an email on Thursday that it was “to be determined” whether the Outlook Forum could be held.
On Friday, of course, President Donald Trump signed a bill to open the government agencies that had been closed, including USDA, through February 15, while Congress and the White House negotiate about the border wall.
USDA had scheduled the release of the Census of Agriculture for Feb. 21, mostly likely to be in conjunction with the Outlook Forum. But as Farm Bureau’s Market Intel noted last week, the shutdown would likely delay the publication of future reports, including the Census.
