Survey: Organic farms produced $70 million in Colorado
February 13, 2010
The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service has released the results of the 2008 Organic Production Survey, which shows there are 220 certified organic farms in Colorado with an average size of 700 acres.
Of those, 34 percent have been in organic production for less than 10 years. That includes farms that were exempt from certification. To be exempt, a farm must follow organic standards and have less than $5,000 in annual sales.
Total value of organic product sales in the state was $70.2 million with crops, including nursery and greenhouse, making up 54 percent of those sales.
