Unless you have been living in a cave with no shoes on, gentle readers, you certainly have heard the phrase, “different strokes for different folks.” Right? A difference of opinion on subjects like religion, global warming, spanking kids, what pickup is best, quarter horse vs. whatever, tattoos and so on. That’s our right to have those opinions and we also have the right to express those opinions. That’s what makes for a good hoss race or sometimes fist-a-cuffs.

I am amazed at times at the seemingly lack of insight that I believe some folks have or should I say, don’t have? Most of us in the West that are involved in agriculture are blessed with a fair amount of common sense most of the time. And, of course, there are some folks in every walk of life in every part of the country that have common sense also. Just not as many as I think there should be. For example: There are folks who want you to not be able to own animals of any kind. They can be your companion or your guest, but you cannot own them. They also believe that you should never ever ride a horse and of course, rodeo is completely out of the question.

What would the 4th of July be like out West without a good ol’ rodeo? These same folks would eliminate all hunting and raising of livestock for food or food products. Yes, by all means let’s not hunt and control the wildlife and receive any funding from it to keep our forest and wild critters maintained. Let’s just let all animals, including all farm and ranch livestock, loose to go wherever and do whatever they desire. First they would all create more just like them and then their food supply would be scarce and they would be getting diseases and begin to die off. But wait, there’s more … those same folks would want the farmers to grow feed free of charge and distribute it to these suffering animals in order to save them from themselves. Many farms and ranches would simply go out of business and so there would be less food for all of the good citizens. Food prices would skyrocket, unemployment would be off the chart but somehow it would all work out in the end. Only the strongest of the animals would survive, the grasses would eventually begin to recover and life as we knew it before would return.

I know, I know, all of this is just plain stupid and is not going to happen because we wouldn’t allow it. It just bothers me that there are so many out there, even in my own community, that think like this. Scary, just plain scary.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July and treat yourself to a good rodeo! Stay tuned, check yer cinch on occasion and I’ll c. ya.
