A portion of the exhibition building at the Nebraska State Fair was designed with the quilt exhibit in mind. It is heat controlled and is a very friendly environment for the hanging quilts. The portion of the building can comfortably display 500 quilts.

This year according to Cynthia Levis, exhibit coordinator, 467 quilts were on display at the state fairgrounds in Grand Island.

“Quilts hold a lot of emotions and memories. They are priceless,” said Cynthia Levis.

Quilt Exhibit participants registered online at their website at http://www.statefair.org on the domestic education link before August 10th. Then they needed to have their quilt on the grounds by August 18th. Participants had to be a Nebraska resident and needed to have finished the quilt in the last 3 years.

There are three divisions to the competition – individual maker, group quilt and the special award category quilts. The individual division is a quilt created, pieced together and appliqued by one maker. The group division is a quilt created by two or more quilters. The special award categories are divisions for themed quilts.

This year featured some very special quilts. The Best of Show quilt was created by Sandi McMillan of Albion, Neb. She created the quilt on a domestic machine and is hand appliqued with the edging containing approximately 320 scallops.

The Reserve Best of Show was created by Marie Clark, Sandra Kosh, Gloria Miller and Jean Waldman and quilted by Kris Vierra, all members of the Nebraska State Quilter’s Guild. They will raffle the quilt off at their convention next year in July. The quilt is of superior quilting with a high skill level and is machine appliqued with rhinestone embellishments.
