Water and Crops Field Day planned Aug. 10
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – Efficient water usage will be the emphasis of a University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Extension Water and Crops Field Day scheduled for Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at Big Springs, Neb., with field research tours at the West Central Water Resources Field Laboratory (WRFL).
Using water efficiently for crop production will be the focus of the field day.
As water is one of the state’s most valuable natural resources, the field day will help farmers and policymakers learn and see irrigation practices and cropping systems on a farm scale that maintain or increase crop production while conserving water.
The WRFL was purchased by UNL in 2007 to research, demonstrate and teach water conserving methods in cropping and livestock systems in western Nebraska. This year is the second growing season research has been conducted at the laboratory, which will be the site for tours during the event.
The event begins at 8:00 a.m. (MDT) with registration at the South Platte High School in Big Springs. The morning agenda includes research updates by UNL West Central Research and Extension Center (WCREC) specialists Rick Funston, Reproductive Physiology; Aaron Stalker, Range Systems; and Simon van Donk, Water Resources. In addition, State Climatologist Allen Dutcher will discuss understanding precipitation variability and its potential impact on Western Nebraska irrigators; Jim Robb, Livestock Marketing Information Center Director, will present a crop and livestock marketing outlook; and Stephen Young, UNL WCREC Weed Ecologist, will discuss integrated strategies for controlling non-native invasive plant species in riparian areas and projections for plant community re-establishment.
A field tour will begin at 1:15 p.m. (MDT) with topics including area geology, using technology to conserve water and energy, skip-row corn to improve drought tolerance of rainfed corn, remote sensing for nitrogen and water management, and innovations in irrigation equipment. The field day will adjourn at 4:00 p.m. (MDT).
