Norman Russell Holmes

Norman Russell Holmes

Norman Russell Holmes, 68, of Grand Junction, Colo., passed away September 10, 2013.

Born to Norman and Barbara Holmes in September 1945 in California. Soon after his birth they moved to Panora, Iowa, where he spent the first 11 years of his life. In 1956 the family moved to Grand Junction, Colo.

Norman graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1963. During high school he played football and wrestled. It is also where he spent numerous hours rebuilding his model A Ford.

In 1965 he started his 40 year long career with the railroad. In 1966 while he was moonlighting as a bouncer at the infamous “Smoke Shack” he met the love of his life Patricia Ann Jensen. They married February 25, 1967 and later went on to have three beautiful daughters. Over the course of his career as an engineer and road foreman they lived in Salt Lake City, Utah. Eugene, Ore. Reno, Nev., returning to Grand Junction in 1998. Retiring from the Union Pacific Railroad in 2005.

Known by his family, friends and co-workers as Normie, Stormin Norman, Rufus and his wife’s favorite “Chuck.” Norm enjoyed camping, wood working, tinkering with his model trains, spending time with his grand children and vacationing with his family.

Norman was not a man of many words but one of action. If you needed help he would be there in a heartbeat plus give you the shirt off his back. He was always eager and willing to serve in his church as needed.

Norman never met a stranger. He could be three counties away and still run into someone he knew. He embraced each of his son-in-laws as if they were his own. Truth is … he relished the male companionship in an all female household.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Ann Holmes of 46 years. His daughters Amie Gardner (Michael) their children Jordan Stewart (Dakota), Joshua and Jaxson Gardner. Paula Austin (Ron) their sons Connor and Caleb Austin. Jenny Labig (Rob) and their children Emily, Hanah, Brandon and Jonathan Labig. His father Norman E. Holmes, brothers, Greg, Doug, Lindsay and sister Christine Bukowski.

Norman is preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Jean Holmes, Grandparents Russell and Fern Newport, Frank and Reva Holmes and infant brother Robert Anthony.

Services were held September 13, 2013 at New Horizons Four Square Church, Grand Junction, Colo.
