Doris Eveline Peterman
Doris Eveline Peterman, 90, passed away on December 31, 2012, of a broken heart.
She was born April 9, 1922, to Harry and Mildred (Britten) White in Elwell, Michigan.
Doris married John Henry Peterman; they were married 68 years until his passing on December 21, 2012. They moved their family from Michigan to Tucson, Ariz., and settled down in Palisade, Colo., in 1986.
Doris enjoyed painting, baseball, and wrote a family memoir book. She was a matriarch of the generations, a 4-H Leader, and a Scout Leader.
She is survived by her son, John Robert Peterman of Palisade, Colo.; daughters, Sally Joseph and Penny Hardrick both of Palisade, Colo., and Susan Hurley; brother, Larry R. White, of Riverdale, Mich.; sister, Marian (White) Tedhams of Elwell, Mich.; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Peterman.
Memorial services were held January 4, 2013 at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.
Burial followed in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Donald Paul Staten
Donald Paul Staten, 88, of Cedaredge, Colo., passed away January 7, 2013 at Horizon’s Care Center in Eckert, Colo.
He was born September 11, 1924 in Dodge City, Kan., to Paul R. and Thelma Jane (Rutherford) Staten.
He spent his childhood in Dodge City, Kan., and graduated from Dodge City High School in May 1942. He furthered his education by obtaining his Associates of Art Degree from Dodge City Junior College in May 1948, then received his Bachelors of Science Degree majoring in Education from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, Kan., in July 1950 and then his Masters of Science Degree from Kansas State College at Pittsburg, Kan., in August 1962.
Donald was previously married to Ruth Hinckley which ended in divorce. To this marriage, two daughters were born.
Donald married Mary S. (Harris) Bush on November 23, 1994 in Tulsa, Okla. He has been a resident of Cedaredge, Colo., for the past 18 years.
Donald honorably served his country in the United States Army from August 1943 until February 1946. Donald, an Art Professor, loved golfing, playing pool, fishing; stained glass and painting. He was an avid antique hunter always looking for the “right deal”.
He is survived by his wife, Mary S. Staten of Cedaredge, Colo.; two daughters, Trinette Nelson and spouse, Terry of Wichita, Kan., and Yvette O’Hara of Golden, Colo.; one sister, Thelma Pauline Mead of Canada; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Thelma Staten; one brother and one sister.
Memorial services honoring Donald’s life will be held at a later date.

Noah Dean Blackwell
Noah Dean Blackwell, 44, passed away December 14, 2012, as a result of an accident.
He was born May 16, 1968, to Noah “Dub” and Charlotte Blackwell in Albuquerque, N.M. When he was two, the family moved to the Baca Grant Ranch near Crestone, Colo. When he was 12, the family moved back to New Mexico where he graduated from Reserve High School in 1986. He attended New Mexico State University and graduated from Texas Christian University in 1989 with a degree in ranch management.
He moved to Gunnison County to work at the Elsinore Ranch in Taylor Canyon.
On July 6, 1991, he married Rose Vader at St. Peter’s Church in Gunnison, Colo.
After working on a number of ranches, including Castleton Ranch on Ohio Creek, the Vader Cloverleaf Ranch on Quartz Creek and the Cross Bar Ranch at Sargents, the couple returned in 1998 to own and operate the Vader Cloverleaf Ranch. He also owned Stampede Pest and Weed, a weed spraying business.
Dean volunteered for the Cattlemen’s Days committee and the Gunnison County Stockgrowers Association, sat on the board of the Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy and was an owner in the Taylor Park Cattle Pool.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting, making people laugh and horseback riding in the high country.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Blackwell; his son, Noah; his daughter, Josie; his parents, Noah “Dub” and Charlotte Blackwell; his grandmother, Edna Blackwell of Delta, Colo.; his sister, Stacie Ochoa, her husband Chus and their children Jeshua and Aihnoa, all of Delta, Colo.; his cousin Mark; and many friends from Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Oklahoma.
Memorial services were held January 3, 2013 at the Fred Field Western Heritage Center in Gunnison, Colo.

Vollie Sanford, Jr.
Vollie Sanford, Jr., 84, of Delta, Colo., passed away December 31, 2012 in Delta, Colo.
He was born on September 27, 1928 in Calhoun, La., to Vollie and Lizzie Mae (Roan) Sanford, Sr. He was one of 12 children.
Vollie grew up in Calhoun, Colo., graduating from Calhoun High School. After graduating, he joined the United States Air Force where he served his country for four years until he was honorably discharged.
Vollie married Billie Jean Fulmer on August 17, 1952 in Wasco, Calif. To this marriage, five children were born.
He has been a resident of Delta County, Colo., since 1984, moving from Bakersfield, Calif. He was a member of the Valley Baptist Church in Bakersfield, Calif. He and Billie still watched the weekly Sunday service via Skype. Vollie was also a member of the Grand Mesa V. F. W. Post #9221.
Vollie enjoyed camping and fishing. He also loved volunteering at the Council Tree Pow Wow where he was Volunteer of the Year in 2007. Vollie was a social butterfly, everyone that entered his home felt like family when they left. Most important to Vollie was his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Billie Sanford of Delta, Colo.; his five children, Tamara Janine Sanford of Portland, Ore., Adrian Denise Gonzales and spouse, Louis of Bakersfield, Calif., Donna Renee Herod and spouse, David, Vollie Ray Sanford and spouse, Reylene M., and Warren Redon Sanford and spouse, Chrystal D., all of Delta, Colo.; a brother, Kenneth “Sonny” Sanford, of San Antonio, Texas; half-brother, Donnie Sanford of Calhoun, La.; two sisters, Laurice Templeton and spouse, Scott of Pearland, Texas, and Jo Miller of San Antonio, Texas; two half-sisters, Sherry Sanford and Linda Sanford, both of Calhoun, La.; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, with a great-grandson on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vollie and Lizzie Sanford, Sr., four brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held on June 9, 2013, details will be published closer to the date.
A private inurnment honoring Vollie’s life will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado in Grand Junction, Colo.
