Arthur Vernon Chaffee, 80, of Delta, Colo., passed away July 30, 2010 at the Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction, Colo.

Arthur Vernon Chaffee was born one of 12 children to Earl and Ruby (Fritz) Chaffee on April 24, 1930 in Grand Haven, Mich. He spent his childhood and attended schools in Grand Haven and Robinson Township, Michigan.

Art honorably served his country with the United States Army as part of the first outfit during the Korean Conflict.

On July 22, 1966, Art married Nell Jane McMann in Spring Lake, Michigan. Art and Nell made Delta their home in Delta 35 years ago and had the honor and privilege of sharing over 44 years of love and marriage together this year. Nell survives.

Art was employed as a carpenter and mason for many years. Later he retired from Pine Hill Farm Pet Grooming. He was an avid horse person who enjoyed riding horses in his younger years and driving horses in harness in later years. He also enjoyed auctions and was passionate about rebuilding and restoring carriages and tractors. He was a founding member of the Grand Mesa Harness Club and a longtime member of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was actively involved with the Thunder Mountain Lives Tonight Pageant that was performed in Delta as well as being an active member of Horse Country when it first started 20 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Nell Jane McMann Chaffee of Delta, Colo.; one daughter, Lori Ann Roberson and husband Jeff of Grand Haven, Mich.; two brothers, Charles (Alva) Chaffee of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Robert (Liz) Chaffee of Alma, Mich.; five sisters Hazel Mroz of Mukegon, Mich., Earma Schears of Spring Lake, Mich., Arlene Bour of Zeeland, Mich., Delores (Bud) Beverly of Grand Haven, Mich., and Edna Herron of Morse, Ill.; and one sister-in-law, Mona Chaffee of Spring Lake, Mich.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three brothers-in-law.

Graveside Inurnment was held October 8, 2010 at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado with military honors being provided by the Grand Valley Honor Guard.
