He was born February 23, 1928, to Myron and Florence Chandler in Kansas City, Mo. He had two older sisters, Jane and Barbara.

George moved to Colorado in 1945 to attend the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he met his future wife, Marjorie Sample. George spent his summers working for the US Forest Service in the high country of Colorado.

George and Marge were married in 1952 in New Castle while he was home on leave from the US Navy after serving in Guam. After the wedding he returned to naval service as a radarman on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer.
