Virginia Ruth (Orr) Maxwell, 89, of Delta, Colo., passed away October 15, 2010 at Eagle Ridge Nursing Home in Grand Junction, Colo.

She was born July 11, 1921 in Waverly, Colo., to Chester A. Orr and Muriel Stillian Orr.

She attended Cache la Poudre schools and graduated salutatorian in 1939. Virginia graduated from Colorado A&M (CSU) in 1943 with a BS degree in Home Economics.

On May 2, 1943 she married Rayburn Leon Maxwell and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he was stationed in the US Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy after WWII, they settled in Grand Junction, Colo. They later lived in Montrose, Colo., before settling in Delta, Colo., where they lived for more than 40 years. The Maxwell’s established the Memory Gardens of Delta County (Mesa View Cemetery). Virginia managed two credit unions – Delta Federal and the Joint District 50 School Credit Unions.

Virginia loved music and was ‘drafted’ as a teenager by her future father-in-law to play the piano for church. From then on she played the piano or organ for the churches she attended until she was unable to play any longer. Virginia also loved to travel. She and Rayburn were ‘Winter Texans’ and lived in Zapata, Texas, for 10 winters. Their favorite trip was the long drive to Alaska. Virginia has a special gift for meeting and remembering people and would often find a personal connection with the people she met.

Virginia lived at The Fountains assisted living facility for eight years and moved to Eagle Ridge Nursing Home eight months ago.
