Dorothy Verlie Ayers, 92, of Eckert, Colo., passed away October 24, 2010 at the Delta County Memorial Hospital after a very short illness.

She was born May 5, 1918 at Crowley, Colo., to Albert I. and Bertha Louise (Barto) Nelson. Dorothy spent her childhood in Manzanola, Colo., and graduated from Manzanola High School with the class of 1936.

On October 31, 1936 Dorothy married Clint N. Ayers in Pueblo, Colo., and to this union three children were born. They celebrated 61 years of marriage before Clint passed away on April 15, 1998 at Eckert, Colo.

The Ayers family lived in Montrose, Colo., from 1947 to 1989 where Clint was engaged in farming and ranching. They moved to Eckert, Colo., in 1989, where Dorothy made her home for the rest of her life.

Dorothy was a member of Elberta Rebekah Lodge No. 106 in Eckert, Colo., the North Mesa Club and Good Neighbor Club.

Dorothy loved to be with her family and really liked being around her grandchildren and spending time with them. She liked traveling, fishing and camping and dancing, in fact she loved to go dancing every Saturday night. She liked to work in her garden, crocheting and sewing. She wrote poetry, she also did her own version of rap. She loved the Rockies and was an avid fan.

She is survived by two daughters Norma Jean Conner of Montrose, Colo., and Judy Verlee Davies and Michael Carroll of Austin, Colo.; two brothers Donald Nelson and his wife Ruth of Mesa, Ariz., and Randall Nelson and his wife Jane of Gilbert Ariz.; sister Lois Ann Silva and her husband John of Stuart, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Betty and her parents.

Memorial services were held October 29, 2010 at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta, Colo.

Interment followed at the Eckert Cemetery, Eckert, Colo.
