Western Slope Obituaries 2-21-11

Shirley Jean Gilfry, 82, of Rifle, Colo., passed away January 30, 2011 at St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., with her children by her side.

She was born on December 22, 1928 in Snyder, Colo. She was the youngest of nine children born to Ephraim and Ethel Vancil.

Her first job out of high school was as a telephone operator in Fort Morgan, Colo. She married Duane Gilfry on September 20, 1947. They lived in Snyder, Colo., until they moved to Carbondale, Colo., in March of 1955. They lived and worked on the Crystal River Ranch where Duane was the ranch foreman. When they retired in 1999, they moved to Battlement Mesa.

Shirley most recently resided at Crossroads Assisted Living in Rifle, Colo. She made many good friends there and especially loved all of the musical entertainment. The wonderful people at Crossroads always marveled at how she knew all the words to the songs as she sang along.

Shirley was active in the Sunday School program at the Carbondale Methodist Church, sang in the choir and contributed to the church bazaars. She loved to bowl and was on bowling leagues with her friend Micki for many years. She enjoyed playing card games and board games. Shirley was an avid, loyal Bronco fan, plus watched the Rockies and the Nuggets whenever she could.

She was a loving, dedicated housewife who raised three children and later helped raise two grandchildren. She would often say “God loves you and so do I.” She will always be so very missed.

She is survived by her children Mike, Becky and Clint; her grandsons Jason McGraw (Lisa) and Justin McGraw (Cate); her brother Gene (Irene); sisters Ruby and Dorothy; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Duane; her parents Ephraim and Ethel Vancil; sisters Merle and Alice; brothers Vernon, John, and Stanley.

Memorial services were held February 4, 2011 at Carbondale Community United Methodist Church in Carbondale, Colo.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Crossroads Assisted Living for their Residents’ Activities fund: Director, Crossroads Assisted Living, 375 W. 24th Street, Rifle, Colo., 81650.
