Joseph Leo Smith, Jr., 89, passed away March 17, 2011 at Crossroads Assisted Living Center in Delta, Colo., under the care of Hospice.

He was born April 29, 1921 in Hotchkiss, Colo., to Leo Smith and Beulah Barrow Smith and was a lifelong resident in Delta County, Colo.

During World War II, Joe served in the Army Air Force West Coast Training Command. He worked heavy construction, mining and mechanics. In 1964, he became a partner/owner in the operation of the Hotchkiss Liquor Store and Quick Clean Laundry.

He was a charter/life member of Hotchkiss B.P.O.E. No. 1807 and a long-time member of American Legion No. 0097. He was also a Life Member of the National Rifle Association. He served on the Board of Directors and was past president of the Lazear Domestic Water Co., and a member of the Hotchkiss Chamber of Commerce.

He was married to Lucille Milcezny of Chicago, Ill. from 1950 until her death in 1963.

In 1964, he married Leona Lell in Las Vegas, Nev., and gained a ready-made family.

He is survived by two step-daughters Kathryn Myers of Seibert, Colo., and Lorraine Driscoll (B.J. McManama), Parker, Ariz.; step-daughter-in-law, Sylvia Lell, Moorhead, Minn.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona; step-son, Gordon Lell; and two step-sons-in-laws, Glen Myers and Norman Driscoll.

Memorial services were held March 24, 2011 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colo.

Inurnment followed at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss, Colo.
