Stewart William Lechleiter, 80, passed away Feb. 16, 2010, at his ranch in Coal Creek as the result of a farm accident, doing what he loved.
He was born July 1, 1929 in Montrose, Colo., to Henry William and Amanda Frances (Stewart) Lechleiter. Stewart spent his childhood in Coal Creek and attended and graduated from Montrose High School. He met Veta Tucker when her family leased onion ground from the Lechleiters in the Coal Creek area, and they were married in Montrose on June 4, 1950.
Stewart loved and worked the ranch with his wife beside him, running cattle on the land his family has owned for over 100 years. The Lechleiter brand has been the same since it was recorded in Montrose County in 1909 to Stewart’s grandfather, Ben Lechleiter. He was a member of the Uncompahgre Cattleman’s Association and was partial to his Angus cows. He and his son were always discussing the merits of Angus versus Simmental breeds. Stewart was proudest of his horses, Goldie, Rusty and Buzz and his dog, Queen. He was a member of Montrose Christian Church, Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association and Consumers Co-op.
He is survived by his children, JoAn (Arlo) Hanson of Cedaredge, Colo., Darlene (Bob) Distel of Grand Junction, Colo., Kim Lechleiter of Coal Creek, Colo., Rita (Boyd) McAlexander of Cedaredge, Colo., and Don Lechleiter of Montrose, Colo.; his 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Veta (Tucker) Lechleiter, on March 3, 2009; and both of his parents.
Services were held on Feb. 22, 2010, at Montrose Christian Church.
Interment was in the Valley Lawn Cemetery.
