Shane Murray Cote
Shane Murray Cote, 44, passed away March 19, 2013.
He was born September 30, 1968, in Portland, Maine. At a young age, Shane moved with his family from Maine to Wyoming where he spent his childhood, growing up on the ranches of the West.
He graduated from Saratoga High School, in Saratoga, Wyo., in 1987.
After graduation, Shane enlisted in the Navy, serving from 1987-1992, including two tours on the U.S.S. Nimitz during Desert Storm. Shane was proud to have served his country though humble regarding his service and reluctant to take credit.
Shane’s life-long dream was to be a veterinarian. He first experienced the life of a vet at 13, working for Doc John Collamer at Saratoga Veterinary Clinic. He worked at the clinic until he graduated from high school, developing the skills and passion he later demonstrated in his professional career.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1992, he enrolled at the University of Wyoming in Laramie where he studied animal science/pre-vet. During his time in college he never wavered from his ultimate goal of becoming a vet in his own right. He graduated with honors in 1996.
During his time at UW, Shane met Robyne Fulks, a fellow animal science major from Cedaredge, Colo. A friendship that began over shared study notes quickly developed into something more.
Staying true to his dream, Shane started classes at Colorado State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in the fall of 1996. He was joined in Fort Collins, Colo., by Robyne in January of 1997. Small classes fostered intense friendships and camaraderie and it was a sweet time for the couple.
Shane and Robyne were married on January 3, 1998, in Cedaredge, Colo., 15 years later. The newlyweds settled in Fort Collins, Colo., while Shane finished vet school and Robyne took graduate classes.
Shane graduated from CSU in May of 2000, and immediately began work for the Carbon County Veterinary Hospital, in Rawlins, Wyo. After two years, the family decided to leave Wyoming and moved to Cortez, Colo., where Shane accepted a job with Montezuma Veterinary Clinic. A professional to his core, Shane thrived at the local clinic, serving people and their animals across the county. He purchased the clinic in 2012, finally fulfilling his childhood dream.
The Cotes were blessed with three sons, Clayton Murray, Chance Daniel and Caden James. Shane loved being a dad. He loved playing with his boys, whether it be throwing the football, wrestling them to the ground or simply making them laugh.
Shane loved being outdoors with his family. His passion for hunting, fishing and camping never waned. His other passion was horses. He loved to break and ride, and was remarkably talented at both. He was skilled with his hands, could fix anything and was up for any project Robyne hinted at.
He is survived by his wife, Robyne Dee; sons, Clayton, Chance, Caden; mother, Naida Taylor; sister, Leneda Davis and husband, Dusty; nephew Galen Davis; niece, Kacey Starr and husband, Daniel; grandniece, Bristol Starr; brother-in-law, Gerry Mack; cousins, Kim and Randy Sikes and Trevor and Derik Sikes; father and mother-in-law, Roger and Fran Fulks; sister-in-law, Heidi Folkers and husband, T.J.; sister-in-law, Tanis McCulloch and husband, Brian; nephews, Aaron and Aden Folkers; and nieces, Rieley and Haylin McCulloch.
He was proceeded in death by his grandfather, Dave Murray; grandmother, Leneda Murray; and aunt, Ann Okane; and stepfather George Pearson.
Memorial services were held March 25, 2013 at Arriola Bible Church in Dolores, Colo. ❖
Stanley Robert Miles
Stanley Robert Miles, 78, of Fruita, Colo., passed away March 27, 2013.
He was born May 6, 1934, to Wallace and Dorothy Miles.
Stanley, at the tender age of 17, began a 12 year Military Career featuring three separate tours serving in both Korea and Vietnam Wars. This was the place he decided to focus on his education.
During this time he married the love of his life, Lorraine Johnson. They have one daughter, Leslie.
After his military career, Stanley went on to get his Masters Degree in Education and taught from 1968-1992. It was here that the seeds of his legacy were planted. As an educator he was an advocate of youth and an encourager of “sticking with it.” Many consider him the person that helped mold and change the course of their life. As he leaves he asks that everyone pick up where he left off and continue to plant seeds of encouragement to youth.
In his retirement years Stanley enjoyed roping. His love for animals and horses allowed this to be his perfect retirement. He was always the header.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Lorraine; daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Leslie Vice; grandchildren, Hillary and Tyler; brothers, Bill (Jeanne) Miles, Gunnison, Colo., and Donald (Delores) Miles, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews that gave him great joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Dorothy Miles, and brother, Jack Miles (Marilyn).
Memorial services were held April 11, 2013 at Legacy Funeral Home in Grand Junction, Colo.
Interment with full Military Honors was at Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.

Orin Albert Albin Jr.
Orin Albert Albin Jr., 96, longtime Cortez, Colo., resident passed away April 4, 2013
He was born December 25, 1916, the son of Orin Albert Albin Sr. and Bessie Hacket in Waverly, Mo.
At the tender age of two, Jr. lost his mother and infant sister in the great flu epidemic of 1918. Jr. and his older sister Ruth went to Missouri to live with the mother’s parents as Orin was sick. When Jr.’s dad recovered he went to Missouri and brought his two kids home to San Luis Valley, Colo. Jr.’s dad married Lucille Jane Baier. There Jr. graduated from Alamosa High School and grew to manhood.
He worked at Ford Auto Parts. That is where he met a man who taught him the shoe repair trade.
Jr. was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1941 and was trained in Camp Weaver, Va. On December 23, 1942, he was shipped overseas to Oran, North Africa, then to a rest camp at Kasserine Pass, North Africa. The first night he was there he was put on guard duty. He was supposed to be relieved at midnight and nobody came. He stayed until 8 a.m., went back to the barracks and nobody was there. His company pulled out without him. He was the last of 250 men. He then was captured and became a prisoner of war for 22 months. All he had were the clothes on his back and a thin blanket. He was in a large group of men, and the only food he had were leftovers from other people’s scraps. While they marched across Europe, they picked up many other prisoners from other countries. Food became hard to find, and many prisoners died and were left where they fell. They ended up at Stalag 38 at Versburg, Germany, north of Berlin. They were rationed a cup of soup per day made of potatoes, barley, and water. He held the thought, “This is a terrible war, but it is the war to end all wars.”
Jr. came home when the war was over and married Ollie Elliott Holman, who had two children, Ray Dean Holman and Dixie Holman Veach Foutz. Together they had Elliott Baier Albin. They farmed in the Mildred area and worked in the Nu-way shoe shop and repair for many years. They also owned a shoe shop and repair in Montrose, Colo., three different stores in Colorado Springs, and one in Summerville, Texas. After retirement he lived in Huntsville, Texas and Cortez, Colo.
He is survived by his wife, Ollie Rose Elliott; his daughter, Dixie (Loyd) Veach Foutz; his grandchildren, Kim Ritter of Indiana, Lucas and Travis Claycomb, Casey and Lexy Veach, Kellie Veach Beyers, and Corey Veach; his grandson-in-law, Larry (Shaunna) Claycomb; seven great grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orin Sr. and Bessie Hacket Albin and Lucile Jane Albin; his sister, Ruth Goldsby; and two sons, Ray Dean Holman and Elliott Albin.
Memorial services were held April 9, 2013 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment followed at Cortez Cemetery.
