Norbert William Grosse-Rhode, 90, of Paonia, Colo., passed away May 15, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital And Medical Center, Grand Junction, Colo.

He was born August 10, 1918 in Dodge, Neb., to Henry and Anne Pitzmier Grosse-Rhode.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia. He grew up in Dodge, Neb. area spending his first year of high school at West Point, Neb. and graduating from Guardian Angels School. He then attended St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, and Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. for one year each. While in Creighton University he suffered a sports related injury that prevented his serving in the military during WWII. He finished his college education with a degree in Business Administration at the University of Neb.



Following graduation he formed a booking agency and booked bands in the Omaha, Neb., Lincoln, Neb., area and the mid-west.

On June 25, 1942 he married Helen Scott. That marriage ended in divorce in 1977. He later met and married Barbara Hohman Farmer.



From 1942 until 1964 he worked for Securities Acceptance Corp., a financial loan services company. He rose to the position of assistant vice-president and opened offices in various towns in Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Kansas during his 23 years with Securities Acceptance Corp. In 1964 he moved to Wichita, Kans. to start Thermo K. Distributors, a spray-on insulation company. He expanded into a home improvement business, Metropolitan Aluminum Discount Company which led him to Denver to live. In 1976 he purchased ranch property on Grand Mesa above Paonia, Colo. and named the ranch the G R Bar Ranch which he operated until his death. He enjoyed big game and bird hunting.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Grosse-Rhode of Paonia, Colo., sons; Stephen Gross-Rhode of Littleton, Colo., Paul Grosse-Rhode of Paonia, Colo., and Gregory A. Grosse-Rhode of Grand Junction, Colo., a step-son Anthony & Sue Farmer of Easton, Conn., and daughters; Shirley & Joe Shemroske of Castle Rock, Colo., Carolyn Puryear of Littleton, Colo., Janyce & Jerry Howard of Denver, Colo., Mary Beth & David Wheeler of Delta, Colo., Michele & Jason Boyd of Beale A.F.B., Calif., Joan Rhode & Dave Dextater of Bailey, Colo., step-daughters; Vi Farmer of Las Vegas, N.M., and Pamela & Kevin Heinrich of Brighton, Colo., two brothers; Cyril & Alda Grosserhode of Dodge, Neb., Elmer & Linda Grosserhode of Dodge, Neb., a sister Sister Marie Grosse-Rhode of Omaha, Neb., 33 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
