Western Slope Obituaries 7-6-09

Leonard Harlan Kirkham, age 81, of Austin, Colo., passed away June 24, 2009 at Horizon Care Center in Eckert, Colo.

He was born September 3, 1927 in Burlington, Kan., to Walter and Margaret Ritchey Kirkham. He married Karen Maxedon on November 17, 1953 at Elko, Nev.

Leonard served in the Navy during World War II having attained the rank of TE2. He was employed as an Air Traffic Controller for many years.



He was a member of First Baptist Church of Delta.

He graduated from Carbondale High School. He resided in Arizona and California prior to moving to Austin, Colo.



Leonard enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

He was a member of Cedaredge V.F.W. Post # 9221 of Cedaredge and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife Karen Kirkham of Austin, Colo., two sons; Stephen Kirkham of Colorado Springs, Colo., Ross Kirkham of Austin, Colo., a daughter Margaret Kirkham of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother G.R. Kirkham of Grand Junction, Colo., five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and four brothers.

Services were held on June 30, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Delta in Delta, Colo.
