Phyllis Janet Larsen, 78, passed away July 17, 2011 at her home in Montrose, Colo., after a brave battle with cancer.

She was born on March 1, 1933 to Michael and Mary (Vetta) Palumbo in Chicago, Ill. On September 25, 1976, Phyllis married the love of her life, John Larsen. Phyllis and John moved to Montrose, Colo., in 1979, where they became active in the local business and ranching communities. After seven years as the owners of the Western Motel, Phyllis and John moved out to their ranch south of Montrose, Colo., where they raised ostriches and llamas. Phyllis remained on the Dolores Creek Ranch until the time of her death.

Phyllis loved Montrose, Colo., and loved spending time with her friends and her family. She served as the director of the Montrose Visitor’s Center, was a member of the Visitor and Convention Bureau Board and worked at the Holiday Inn in Montrose, Colo. Phyllis also served as a member of the original Montrose Hotel and Motel Association. She contributed to many special events and organizations in Montrose, Colo., including the Montrose Community Foundation, Bosom Buddies and the Food and Wine Festival. Phyllis was a generous and supportive friend to all who knew her.

She is survived by her dear sister, Sandy Hickman and her husband, Bob, of Montrose, Colo.; her nephew, Rob Hickman of Morrison, Colo.; three nieces, Lisa Hickman (Steve Boyle) of Montrose, Colo., Sue Crepinsek (Ron) of Las Vegas, Nev. and Kris Wall (Mike) of Mill Creek, Wash.; grand-nieces, Sara Crepinsek, Briana Crepinsek and Taylor Wall and her grand-nephews, Michael Crepinsek and Steven Crepinsek, brought her great joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Larsen; and her parents, Michael and Mary Palumbo.

Memorial services were held July 22, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Montrose, Colo.
