Wheatland farm wins Wyoming Hay Show
Dave Hinman of Hardrock Farms in Wheatland, Wyo., was named Premier Exhibitor and Best in Show winner at the Wyoming State Fair Hay Show in Douglas.
The Hay Show displays Wyoming’s high quality dairy alfalfa, mixed hays for the cow-calf producer, and the best grass hay for the high-end horse marketplace.
Hinman and four other top hay producers will move on to participate in the World Dairy Expo and World Forage Superbowl in Madision, Wisc., September 28 through October 4. Three of the four other hay producers were first-time participants. The Wyoming Business Council pays the entry fees for all five entries.
Judges analyzed entries based on five categories: forage analysis, physical qualities, appearance, leaf retention, and leaf capture.
Scott Keith, Wyoming Business Council Livestock and Forage Program manager, said excessive rain across the state earlier this summer created haying conditions that were less than optimal.
“This year’s Hay Show participants not only had to contend with each other, but also Mother Nature,” said Keith. “Weather conditions may have affected the number of entries, but the quality of what we had was still very good.”
