Y.N.C.A. (Young Norwegian Cowboys Association)

Gwen Petersen
Big Timber, Mont.

Remember the Village People bunch whose best smash hit was Y.M.C.A.? The group formed back in 1977 and featured “costumes depicting American cultural stereotypes.” (Indian, cowboy, leather man, cop, soldier, and construction worker).

The Y.M.C.A. song has been parodied a bazillion times. The script for this year’s Toot, Snoot, n’ Hoot show is titled Wild and Woolly and Full of Fleas. So, naturally, we’re doing a version of Y.M.C.A. Except there’s no such organization as Young Men’s Christian Association in this community. The culture around here is basically derived from Norwegian heritage. Thus — for purposes of a comedy show — was born the Young Norwegian Cowboy Association or: Y.N.C.A. parody.

In the original, the actions to accompany the lyrics are: Y — arms outstretched and raised upwards. M — made by bending the elbows from the ‘Y’ pose so the fingertips meet over the chest. C — arms extended to the left. A — hands held together above head. The Wild and Woolly and Full of Fleas singers have got the tune and the actions conquered but doing an N has become a challenge.

Y.N.C.A.

(Young Norwegian Cowboys Assoc.)

Cowboy, there’s no need to feel down

I said, cowboy, pick yourself off the ground

I said, cowboy, cause you’re on a new range

There’s no need for you to feel strange.

Cowboy, there’s a place you can go

I said, cowboy, when you’re feelin’ real low

You can saddle a horse and follow a cow

Norwegian cowboys sure know how.

Chorus …

It’s fun to ride for the Y.N.C.A.

It’s fun to ride for the Y.N.C.A.

They have everything that a puncher enjoys

You can hang with other cowboys.

It’s fun to ride for the Y.N.C.A.

It’s fun to ride for the Y.N.C.A.

You can wear a bright shirt;

you can wear fancy boots

You can do all, even chew snoose.

Cowboy, are you listening to me?

I said, cowboy, what do you wanna be?

I said, cowboy, you can wear jingling spurs

And a belt with leather-carved words.

Chorus …

It’s fun to ride for the Y.N.C.A.

It’s fun to ride for the Y.N.C.A.

They have everything that a puncher enjoys

You can hang with other cowboys.

Y.N.C.A. … you’ll find it at the Y.N.C.A.

Cowboy, cowboy, there’s no need to feel down.

Cowboy, cowboy, get yourself off the ground

Y.N.C.A…. you’ll find it at the Y.N.C.A.

Cowboy, cowboy there’s no need to feel down.

Cowboy, cowboy, get yourself off the ground.

Cowboy, cowboy, keep on ridin’ the range.

Y.N.C.A….just go to the Y.N.C.A.

Cowboy, cowboy, keep on ridin’ the range …

Picture this: The singers have been prancing around the auditorium doing the actions, getting the crowd to join in, generally creating a lot of excitement and fun. You can see the problem: While galloping about, how does one make an N? If one is limited to a body which only has two arms, two legs, one head…? ❖
