Kentucky Governor William Goebel died of wounds after being shot by assassins on January 30. Goebel, who had prevailed in a dispute over the winner of the election, had been sworn in on his deathbed.

A coal mine explosion in West Virginia killed 50 miners.

An explosion of blasting powder in a coal mine in Scofield, Utah killed at least 200.

The Galveston Hurricane killed 6,000-12,000 in the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

The first automobile show in the United States opened at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Milton S. Hershey introduced the milk chocolate Hershey bar.

In New Haven, Conn., Louis Lassen of Louis’ Lunch made the first modern-day hamburger sandwich. According to family legend, one day a local businessman dashed into the small New Haven lunch wagon and pleaded for a lunch to go. Louis Lassen, the establishment’s owner, hurriedly sandwiched a broiled hamburger between two slices of bread and sent the customer on his way, so the story goes, with America’s first hamburger being served.
