Nebraska governor:Don’t buy ultra-processed foods; will talk to Trump about beef

Pillen-RFP-083126
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen, a Republican, said Monday that consumers should not buy ultra-processed foods and that people who own stock in companies that make ultra-processed foods should sell it because those companies are going to go broke.
At an event on school meals in the Agriculture Department patio and at a news conference, Pillen said that during the energy crisis of the 1970s the United States developed a cheap food policy that encouraged the development of the ultra-processed food industry.
Pillen said that people should “stay out of the middle aisles” in the grocery stores where food is sold in boxes and jars, and that they should buy whole milk, not almond milk, which he described as “almond nut juice.”
When Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins asked him at the news conference to comment on President Trump’s decision to allow the tariff-free importation of 300,000 tons of ground beef over the next 90 days, Pillen said he is “incredibly grateful for everything that President Trump is doing to address costs,” but that the decision to import the beef tariff-free is “very disappointing for Nebraska ranchers.”
But rather than criticize Trump publicly, Pillen said he “will have a private conversation with him” about the policy.
