THE RANCH RESCHEDULES EQUINE EVENTS FOR UPCOMING WEEK DUE TO EHV-1 VIRUS
Loveland, CO – After the confirmed outbreak of EHV-1 (Equine Herpes Virus) throughout the Western United States and Canada, The Ranch in Loveland is taking the precautionary measure of rescheduling or canceling equine events that are to take place at the multi-purpose campus over the next week.
Bob Herrfeldt, Director of The Ranch, said on Wednesday, “After serious consideration and discussion with the State Veterinary Office, CSU Vet Hospital, 4-H/Extension and similar facilities in Colorado, the staff of The Ranch feels that it is in the best interest of the well being of the horses and the bio-safety of our facility to cease any horse events at The Ranch for at least one week or until the EHV-1 virus is contained.” Herrfeldt continued, “This closure will affect events for the upcoming week for now, and we will reevaluate in the approaching days whether it is necessary to continue the closure any further.”
Laurel Kubin, Director of the Larimer County 4-H and Extension said “We participated in and support The Ranch in this decision. It is all of our responsibility to ensure the well-being of our animals.”
The Ranch currently has no horses on campus; however canceling the equine events is a measure to halt the spread of the virus. In discussions with the State Veterinary Office it became evident that allowing the transportation of horses to and from our facility, not only puts the horses and facility at risk, it also allows for the proliferation of the virus to continue, which is what needs to be avoided. The virus is an equine virus only, not transmittable to humans, dogs or other species, so all other events at The Ranch will occur as scheduled.
Equine events as of Wednesday, May 17:
Colorado Horse Company Horse Sale (Rescheduled to Saturday, June 25).
All 4-H Horse project events (Cancelled)
