As Nebraska Public Transit Week begins, Open Plains Transit is proud to announce its commitment to supporting the firefighters and volunteers currently serving our region. While this week is typically a celebration of transit’s role in our infrastructure, the team at Open Plains Transit believes there is no higher honor than using their resources to support those on the front lines.

“We are truly honored to be supporting our firefighters and volunteers right now,” said Jonnie Kusek, director of transportation, for Open Plains Transit. “It happens to be the start of Nebraska Public Transit Week, and we couldn’t think of a better way to mark the occasion than by doing what little we can to show our gratitude for their service.”

Updated Donation Instructions: Due to extreme wind and weather conditions, Open Plains Transit is currently unable to leave bus doors open for drop-offs. Donors are kindly asked to bring items directly into the designated drop-off locations rather than leaving them at the vehicles.

Requested Items for Donation:

  • Drinks: Bottles Water, Sports Drinks, Electrolyte Packets
  • Personal Care & Relief Essentials: Wet Wipes, Tylenol, Lip Balm, Eye Drops/Wash
  • Toiletries: Travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, soaps, and toothpaste
  • Dental Care: Individually wrapped toothbrushes.
  • Supplies: Quart and gallon-sized Ziploc-type bags.

Regional Support & Logistics: Open Plains Transit continues to serve the broader community and is offering to assist with large-scale donations. If a community group or central location has a bulk load of items requiring pickup or delivery, please contact Open Plains Transit at (308)-761-8747.

To ensure the safety and efficiency of this service:

  • Volunteers must be available on-site to assist with loading and unloading.
  • Coordination of this free service will occur during travel through the community, provided it does not interfere with standard transit operations.

Open Plains Transit thanks the community for their continued support. We are stronger together.
