Thompson: Whole milk vote expected on House floor next week
The House is expected to vote next week on the bill to allow schools to serve whole milk, House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Pa., said on Wednesday during the committee’s Member Day hearing.
The bill has already passed the Senate. Under current regulations, schools cannot serve whole milk on the grounds that it contains too much saturated fat.
Last week, Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., visited St. Albans City School to celebrate the Senate’s passage of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act.
The dairy industry believes the availability of whole milk would increase consumption in the schools. Advocates for non-dairy milk options have noted that the bill would also make it easier for students to get the non-dairy milks.
