FAS: Mexico sugar production up, consumption down
The Agriculture Department’s Foreign Agricultural Service in a report released today forecast that Mexico’s marketing year 2026-2027 sugar production will be 5.45 million metric tons, 1% higher than the estimate for MY 2025/26.
“The increased production forecast is based on seasonal rains during the previous MY and a continued recovery of the planted area in MY 2026/27,” FAS said.
The report also includes details of the current state of the complicated U.S.-Mexico relationship on sugar.
“Mexican sugar consumption for MY 2026/27 is forecasted to decrease 1% due to the expected initial impact of the 2026 Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS),” FAS added.
FAS also said the tax will lead to lower imports of high-fructose corn syrup.
