Our children are watching

I have to admit I didn’t listen to all of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. I just can’t do 1 hour and 48 minutes of Trump telling us how great everything is.
I’m sure there are people who are doing well under his policies, but I, personally, am not feeling it. And I’m pretty sure many of you are not as well.
I am willing, however, to let him make it up to me in 2026. If and when that happens I will write an Editor’s Note to let him know I am pleased, because I’m sure he reads The Fence Post from cover to cover.
But I have to say that in watching news coverage of the annual address, the behavior of the Democrats who attended was once again appalling.
I can’t imagine not standing up and applauding the American hockey team that just won Olympic gold, a 100-year-old man who won both a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, a man who saved lives after a girls summer camp in central Texas was flooded and so many other brave, innovative and generous Americans.
Also, as a voter and a taxpaying American citizen, I would be annoyed if my representatives in Congress acted like children during State of the Union address.
In life there are a lot of things we, as adults, don’t want to do. But if it is important we need to suck it up and act like adults no matter what.
I think that’s what gets me the most angry with our politics today. Adults need to remember that our children are watching, and the eyeful they are getting right now is extremely disturbing.
I was talking to a woman recently, who lives here in Wyoming, who was telling me that her children had to put up with other children in their school acting like dogs. Instead of carrying on conversations with other children, they would just bark at them.
I don’t know of any teachers in my school who would have put up with that kind of behavior. But it’s happening right here in Wyoming.
Then there are the protests against law enforcement. Our children are watching as so-called grown ups harass law enforcement officers.
And this swearing by legislators, if this really necessary. Remember these speeches and rants are on TV and social media and will follow you for a long as you live. I this the legacy you want to leave your children and their children?
This behavior needs to stop. Next time you get an urge to swear on national TV or assault an officer of the law think twice. Our children are watching.
