Rona Johnson grew up on a sheep farm in rural North Dakota. She attended the University of North Dakota, where she earned a degree in political science. She started her journalism career as a clerk at Agweek magazine based in Grand Forks, N.D., and later became a staff writer and then editor of the agriculture magazine. She also worked at the Grand Forks Herald as an editor, reporter and columnist. Johnson also worked for BBI International as the features editor for Ethanol Producer Magazine and Biodiesel Magazine and then as editor for Biomass Magazine.
