CSU recognizes Dallas Horton as Livestock Leader

Colorado State University

Dallas Horton, a long-time leader in the cattle industry, has been selected by faculty members of Colorado State University’s Department of Animal Sciences as the 2010 Livestock Leader.

The person or people selected each year for the Livestock Leader award are dedicated to the livestock industry, have demonstrated leadership and furthered their field. The Department of Animal Sciences recognizes each of the recipients for their work with the prestigious award and portrait prominently displayed in the department.

Horton was born in Sheridan, Wyo., and raised on a sheep and cattle ranch in eastern Montana. After graduating from high school in Broadus, Mont., he served in the U.S. Army. Upon return from the service, Horton attended Montana State University majoring in pre-vet. He later graduated with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University.

Horton came to Colorado State University to serve as a large animal veterinary intern. Following the completion of his internship, Horton stayed on with the veterinary staff at CSU and simultaneously completed a Master’s of Science degree in animal nutrition.

He then started Horton Cattle Companies in the Fort Collins and Greeley areas. Horton grew the business to include a ranch in Wyoming, a large seed stock operation, an embryo transfer center, a private beef cattle research center and three feedlots. He also operated a small packing house, a private beef store, restaurant and western nightclub. Horton consulted for feedlots as far away as South Africa and has been instrumental in shipping cattle to Japan and Russia.

“He has meant and contributed much to the beef industry in the state,” said William Wailes, head of the Department of Animal Sciences at CSU. “Dallas is a great friend of CSU, the livestock and beef industry in Colorado. We are proud to present the Livestock Leader award to Dallas.”

Horton has been active in the College of Agricultural Sciences and CSU athletics. He is an avid pilot and holds a private pilot commercial license and a helicopter pilot license.

Horton has served on the U.S. Beef Board, as president of the Academy of Veterinary Consultants, president of the Colorado Livestock Association, a member of the National Cattleman’s Beef Association and is a lifetime member of the American Association of Bovine Veterinarians.
